Item Details

B.J. Novak's One More Thing: Stories and Other Stories is an endlessly entertaining, surprisingly sensitive, and startlingly original debut that signals the arrival of a brilliant new voice in American fiction. A boy wins a $100,000 prize in a box of Frosted Flakes--only to discover that claiming the winnings might unravel his family. A woman sets out to seduce motivational speaker Tony Robbins--turning for help to the famed motivator himself. A new arrival in Heaven, overwhelmed with options, procrastinates over a long-ago promise to visit his grandmother. We meet Sophia, the first artificially intelligent being capable of love, who falls for a man who might not be ready for it himself; a vengeance-minded hare, obsessed with scoring a rematch against the tortoise who ruined his life; and post-college friends who try to figure out how to host an intervention in the era of Facebook.nbsp; Along the way, we learn why wearing a red T-shirt every day is the key to finding love, how February got its name, and why the stock market is sometimes just . . . down . Finding inspiration in questions from the nature of perfection to the icing on carrot cake, One More Thing has at its heart the most human of phenomena: love, fear, hope, ambition, and the inner stirring for the one elusive element just that might make a person complete. Across a dazzling range of subjects, themes, tones, and narrative voices, the many pieces in this collection are like nothing else, but they have one thing in common: they share the playful humor, deep heart, sharp eye, inquisitive mind, and altogether electrifying spirit of a writer with a fierce devotion to the entertainment of the reader. Worth it for the few brilliant stories, but a surprisingly number fall flat. The brilliants ones, though, are truly brilliant.

Some stories were funny but not on the par of a Dave Barry......

It takes a lot for me to stop reading a book once I've started it, but that is what happened with this book. I did not find it amusing in the slightest.

A HOOT AND A HOLLER AND WORTH EVERY DOLLAR!!!!!!!!!! The most clever, hilarious book i've read in ages! Sedaris fans will be absolutely delighted. Who knew the shallow twerp Ryan from "the Office" (played by BJ Novak) was secretly a literary genius and Harvard grad? I was blown away, and I basically loathe what passes for literature these days. I think my absolute favorite piece in the book has to be "the comedy central roast of Nelson Mandela". Pure brilliance.

This book is hilarious - for the most part; and I'm willing to forgive the author's occasional use of obscene language. Novak shows the ability to make the ridiculously inane things incredibly funny. For example his "No one goes to Heaven to see Dan Fogelberg," is a brilliant satire.

Mostly very short and quite droll short stories by this actor best known for his role on the tv show, "The Office." Tone could be called pretty cynical and world weary if it weren't so funny. Also, amusingly, several characters reappear surreptitiously in more than one story.

I haven't been able to get this book out of my mind. Certainly anyone who enjoys the writing of comedians like Tina Fey or Mindy Kaling should try it out, but the insight, humor, and empathy on display this collection of short stories make it a must-read for lovers of literary fiction, too. Just a wonderful, surprising book.

"If you love something, let it go.
If you don’t love something, definitely let it go.
Basically, just drop everything, who cares."
