I was expecting so much more from this book. The characters are all boring and unlikable, their problems are generic and petty. The premise was great, but ended up being a cliche tale in an asylum with dumb cops, a lame attempt at romance and a poor ended to top it all off. Had a few moments that made it worth finishing but wouldn't recommend this as a first choice to anyone. The best character was Yi, and he's not even that important!

This was a rather large disappointment with flat characters, an awful mystery, and terrible romance.
Total rating: 2 stars (I'm being nice) I would read Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children ten times over before I came within 100 feet of this book.

This book was amazing and leave you sacred from the minute you start it. The true definition of Insanity.

*I an writing this review from an advance reader copy, NOT the version the library has.* This book is almost like an episode of the X-files, without any of the tv show's characters. When the normal building New Hampshire College Prep program is held in, Dan Crawford is forced to stay in the new dorm: an old asylum. Brookline Asylum is something like Batman's Arkham Asylum. It seems to create madness, and the main characters are tied to it's past. The plot was slightly confusing, especially as the story progresses. One thing I didn't like was the extreme focus on Dan. It seemed like Abby and Jordan got shoved out of the story, which worked against it. There were also some plot inconsistencies, but overall I enjoyed it. I recommend reading though it twice. Fans of the X-files will enjoy this book.

Inspiration – there’s a right way and a wrong way to use it. Asylum gets it all wrong.
The integration of old photographs into a narrative, or the creation of a story around found imagery, has been done well before (Ransom Riggs) but this book was far less successful. I went in with the expectation for an asylum type story. I never really expect these to be highly original, but Roux’s work felt formulaic at best, lazy at worst.

Very dissapointing. Leaves alot of unanswered questions unanswered and doesn't have a good plot.
