Wordless pictures books rarely disappoint and this is no exception. There is a great intrigue and interest as your eye adjusts to the angles/shapes that combine to make this story. the early pages are not without color and when true color (purple) is introduced your experience may be that this is the greatest purple you have seen in awhile, a deep, rich stunning purple. The development of friendship is quite deep and natural, a path every young person could see and believe, as they have likely experienced a similar easy, effortless & deep friendship themselves.

No-text picture book. I was thinking early in the book that it really could use some text, then when the bullies attack the bird and other colored birds come to the boy... well, tears were rolling down my face. Very powerfully illustrated without a single word at all. Only non-word book I can say that about.

In this poignant, visually striking picture book, a small bluebird makes friends with a lonely little boy. The bird coaxes the boy to come out of his shell, and together they explore the city and play in the park. But their day together is interrupted by a frightening encounter with bullies, leading to a heartbreaking but ultimately hopeful ending. The powerful illustrations speak for themselves in this wordless tale; a limited colour palette and crisp, geometric lines give the book a fresh, modern look, almost like an animated movie. Unique, moving, and memorable, Bluebird provides a timely invitation for kids to talk about issues of friendship and loss.
