While the illustrations were awesome and told a "silent story" this could have been a really cool story WITH words. Slightly disappointed, as I didn't know beforehand there were only illustrations.

AMAZING. Really, I never write reviews, but this book deserves one. It is truly delightful. Now words, just amazing pictures of a budding friendship. What I love is that the flamingo laughs at Flora at first, and this really helped me discuss feeling with my 4 year old. When the flamingo realizes that she hurt Flora's feelings, she must change what she is doing so that she can correct what happened. We talked about outsides and insides (which helps because this is also a lift the flap book) and how when our outsides feel good, our insides feel good, and dancing with our friends is a great way to make our outsides/insides feel wonderful. Long way to write-- GET THIS BOOK.

An incredibly elegant flamingo dances ballet, while a girl imitates its every move. No other book, has captured the beautiful movements so thoroughly. As the child follows along, she stumbles, and realizes that her body is not as lithe as the flamingo's, but the flamingo encourages her to continue, and their dance melts into a duet which ends with a fun splash. The pink sakura blossoms are the only bit of background added, for they add a sense of atmosphere rather than place. Almost everything is done in a delicate pink, the most notable exception being the girl's yellow diving cap. Ballet steps involve movement, so to get a sense of the position start, and end, flaps are used. The entire book is wordless, and this is a good thing because words would have only dragged it down. The illustrations just draw emotions out of you, there is a little humour, joy, and a sweet yearning to join in with them. When it comes to dance, it is always more fun when you have a partner to do it with.

Lovely book. Great illustrations. My 3 year old daughter loved it.

Beautiful to touch, a lovely story without words about the joy of dance. Just try to look at it without humming a waltz! Check out the book tralier: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kOSA8w7F730

At its heart, Flora and the Flamingo is just an unassuming little story about making a friend. There’s nothing very complicated about that idea. It’s just all in how you present it, baby. Consider this one book that’s not afraid to let clever (yet essentially simple) design and good art do the heavy lifting.

A single flamingo lands and perches on one leg beneath the falling pink blossoms. It does not notice the single flippered foot that appears behind it nor, at first, the bathing suited little girl that mimics his stance. But when he starts to stretch (or is he dancing?) he can’t help but see how she tries to imitate him, wing for wing. In a moment of cussidness he bleats at her, causing her to tumble head over heel into the water. Chastened, the flamingo offers a wing and the two embark on a fantastic dance, culminating in a joyous leap into the water and an elegant bow and curtsey.
