Add a CommentGood overview of many cities and how they were designed or in some cases, just happened. Could've done without the preaching about carbon footprints though. We're not Europe; Canada/U.S. are big!! Bikes and trains are nice but I wish they'd stop trying to push their model of cities on us; it won't work here since everything is so spread out. We need cars. Sorry.
Starts slow, but once it gets into the city case studies it gets interesting. Good general-interest piece for anyone who lives in a city and is concerned about its future direction.
I'm not the least bit involved in City planning, so I feel anyone could be interested in this documentary. I will say, though, be alert and rested when you watch it. I saw it at the end of an exhausting day and I toughed it out, but it was hard. I love how the DVD really has you take a hard look at your assumptions of how to build a city, how people move through a city and the different visions of what makes it livable. The most poignant example was when discussing affordable housing - for example - that doing something as simple as ASKING can yield amazing and empowering results for both the planners and the clients.
I was inspired by what I saw and heard. We do need to be more focused on population growth in cities, however.
Excellent look at new thinking about how cities can be developed.
Most inspiring. A must-see for all those involved in city planning.
