very good
Watched it just for Wahlberg & Bale but was quickly drawn in by the story & characters. Very impressed. Haven't seen a very different pair of actors play brothers nearly this well since Reedus & Flannery in Boondock Saints.
I am NOT a fan of Mark Wahlberg, by any means, but he was well suited for this role. Christian Bale is an outstanding actor, he's a chameleon, and Amy Adams gives a great performance as well. The nasty, catty pack of females were annoying, yet funny too. Genuinely realistic, well done movie.
One of the better so-called "sports movies" I've seen though it skews a little closer to being mostly a family/brother drama. Director David O. Russell does a superb job of showing how family can both build a person up and also tear them apart all at the same time. The Fighter opens with Dicky and Micky being interviewed by HBO for what Dicky believes is a documentary about his boxing comeback, and this sets the stage for the entire film. Christian Bale's Dicky is so charming, so full of energy that he eclipses Mark Wahlberg's Micky any time they're onscreen together, which is exactly the dynamic between the two Ecklund brothers. Wahlberg gives a fine performance, but it's tough to outshine Bale and the dynamic Melissa Leo here. Bale's performance is utterly raw yet surprisingly polished. He keeps Dicky's instability and anger hovering right below the surface of his charm, and whenever he taps into it, the results are a total knock out. No question Bale more than earned his Oscar here.
Inspirational!
The Fighter is a good boxing movie based on the real life stories of boxers Dicky and Mickey Ward. The storyline follows their lives and their extremely dysfunctional family relationships. During his prime Dicky was a decent boxer, the pride of Lowell, MA. However, Dickey became a crack addict with brutal consequences for the brothers. After some major setbacks, as well as a prison stint for Dicky, the brothers embark on a boxing comeback. The excellent boxing sequences and fine performances by Mark Walhberg and Christian Bale make this movie worth watching.
The only good thing about this movie is Amy Adams and Melissa Leo.
Only could handle the first half hour..maybe it got better ? If you like movies about disfunctional families you might like this one.
Not exactly Mark Wahbergs best- but a decent movie. Christopher Bale has a great performance here.
