Comment
Add a Commentquite entertaining and a really great cast.
Great cast in a very good film. I liked the first 60% of the film the best showing Loretta's roots and life before success. After she starts to make it, it becomes the same old story, not that that is the fault of the film makers.
A+ DVD
Initially I had issues with casting. The only thing I knew about this movie was that Sissy Spacek portrayed Loretta Lynn, which I agreed with. But I didn't think Tommy Lee should be acting as Doo. I also had to ponder William Sanderson as the moonshiner, having recently watched the final cut of Blade Runner. (If you have to ask...) Later in the movie I was taken aback at Beverly D'Angelo portraying Patsy Cline. Hmmm...?! So, at first I merely resigned myself to the cast. However, as the movie progressed things really fell into place. I was so wrong. Brilliant casting! Each actor, as I knew them, faded into the background and their character took over. Beyond that, this movie was tough to watch. Which means it was a success. I really didn't know about Loretta's background, her often dubious relationship, or just where she's from and where she's been. In her interview (in the Bonus Materials) she says she had a hard time watching also. In fact, she can't watch it anymore because it's just too real. What more can be said?
An excellent performance by Sissy Spacek as Loretta Lynn without a doubt and an entertaining portrayal of Patsy Cline by Beverly D'Angelo, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER is thoughtfully created, sometimes comedic and sometimes serious, but not a perfect film. Flawed with its intermittent periods of great boredom, COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER has a few memorable scenes, but it's not a film for everyone. However, for country music fans who love a rags-to-riches underdog story, this film might be a treat.
