I'm finally getting to reading a book by Maureen Johnson, and she doesn't disappoint. Excellent writing; excellent storytelling. I was really into the character and her school year in London, with the murder mystery adding delicious tension and suspense. Then, maybe a third of the way in, there was a twist that changed the landscape and actually detracted from my enjoyment of the book. I don't want to say what that was, but I think I would have liked this even more without that aspect of the story. Even so, four full stars.

I actually liked this book more than I thought I would! I kept putting off reading it and ended up renewing it 3 times before I finally got around to reading it, but I'm glad I finally did. I loved the first half of the book, but the last half got kind of confusing for me, and I wasn't sure what was going on or what might happen next. Overall, I really did like this book. The characters were entertaining and the storyline was very original and not like anything else I've read. Yes, I would recommend this book if you like mysteries/ teen books.

The Name of the Star was a great murder mystery except it was a bit gory. Still, it was a facinating read dealing with mystery and the supernatural. I can't wait for the next installment of the shades of London.

It has some exciting and edge of your seat parts but it is not really about Jack the Ripper. Good for fans of murder mysteries.

The name of the Star is about Aurora "Rory" Deveaux, a girl from Louisiana, who chooses to spend a year in London at a boarding school called Wexford. On the day she arrives in London, a woman is murdered in the exact place, time, day, and way as the first Jack the Ripper murder from 1888. Soon more murders occur corresponding with the original dates of the Jack the Ripper "legend" in the same gruesomely way and London with its extensive CCTV cameras does not have a clue to who the culprit is. On the night of one of the murders, Rory sees a man. A man that her roommate does not see. Rory finds herself as the only person to have seen "the murder". Strange things start happening to Rory pulling her in to the midst of London's greatest mystery. It is up to Rory and her new found friends and the mysterious Shades of London to stop the Jack the Ripper copycat from killing the innocent.
