List - Awkward Date Movies by: hzabski Apr 12, 2011

Both movies follow a hard living, gambling addicted police lieutenant who relishes in abusing his power. The original Abel Ferrera directed Bad Lieutenant features Harvey Kietel crying, screaming, and otherwise having a spiritual breakdown for several minutes in a church (a scene that's very fun... Though it shares a title and some basic ideas (cop corruption, drugs and violence), this is hardly a remake of Abel Ferrara's guilt-ridden crime film of 1992 starring Harvey Keitel. Director/madman Werner Herzog claimed he'd never seen it or heard of Ferrara, but that could've been a stunt. The questions with a movie like this is does it know what it's doing or is it really just bad? It walks a fine line, although when the iguanas show up, you'll probably think that the whole movie is just a sick, fever dream joke, anchored by a gonzo, go for broke performance by Nic Cage. The story doesn't really make much sense and it's disappointing if you're a fan of Herzog, but it has it's share of batpoop crazy moments and a decent supporting cast, including Eva Mendes, Val Kilmer, Brad Dourif, Michael Shannon and Shea Whigham, who looks like a young Michael Douglas. It ends with the immortal question "Do fish dream?"

This movie is garbage. In the first 25 minutes the movie lost all credibility. I watched for another 30 minutes and then couldn’t take it anymore. Not a huge fan of Nicholas Cage, but he has made some decent movies in the past and this is definitely not one of them. Give this one a huge pass.

The Bad Lieutenant - Port of Call: New Orleans ---- (DVD - 2010) ---- Very strong content and well played ---- The Lieutenant is Addicted to drugs ---- Played by Nicolas Cage he is, in his roll, a very foul leader of crimes in order to lead this chosen path. This movie is not a good choice for a youth to watch. ---- You may not finish this movie yourself ! ---- RichardPaul (finished 10/18/13)

The old tax dodger was OK here, his concubine believable and it looked like New Orleans was the den of iniquity that Katrina embellished it to be even more than it had been

It was O.K for a home TV movie. I was entertained and interesting. But it was NOT worth the long library wait or the price to rent from a Red Box. "I fast forwarded a lot but not all the way.

Better than I expected! Solid script, and Cage played it perfectly. More grit than slick. It delivers.

I don't like Cage much. He has done a lot of bad movies. However, this is a great performance by him. He plays the part to a tee, and the movie is well written and extremely gritty. Graphic situations abound. You wonder through the movie how low the bad lieutenant can go. There are many cringe-worthy scenes, as well as some darkly humorous situations. Cop movies are a dime a dozen, but this one truly shines.
