Ahh the classic. The key to this movie is not identifying it with the book. I made that mistake years ago and hated it. When you watch it independently of the story it is such an amazing film. Yes it's slightly dated with it's 70's look but it doesn't matter. Every horror fan should watch this, and i believe every true horror fan will enjoy it.

After seeing room 237 I had to revisit this classic movie and it didn't disappoint but all those wack jobs in room 237 are crazy. Must see on blue ray the picture quality and sound are great. Jack is great

Nothing Like the book at all. It was way off and the fact that the director had the movie center around Jack Torrence was a very bad choice. 1997 version written with Stephen King is a far better movie. More of the books essence and moral story line is shown. Steven Weber is amazing as Jack Torrence. It is a complete transformation from beginning to end. Rebecca De Mornay plays a less annoying Wendy. I promise watch this version and than compare movies.

I must apologize to Kubrick. After having seen the abysmal EYES WIDE SHUT, I ran his name through the dirt. Only now, having seen his 1980 foray into horror, courtesy of Stephen King, do I understand why he has garnered quite a large and loyal fan base. An atmospheric horror that builds and builds until it catapults into its own madness in a thrilling climactic conclusion, it's films like THE SHINING that make the suspenseful horror-thriller genre one deserving of recognition. (Having said that, the ending is so iconic at this point, burned into everyone's psyche, that it's important to note that the rest of the film leading up to it is worth watching just as much as those last handful of minutes.) I very much enjoyed it and, for anyone patient enough for the pay-off, I would recommend THE SHINING.

Once again, Kubrick proves that he can master any genre as he creates one of the greatest horror films of all time. He turns an above average Stephen King novel into a masterpiece by cranking the intensity and adding layer upon layer of ambiguity and discomfort without getting into King's unsubtle supernatural plot devices.(Just watch King's made for tv version of the Shining to see the difference. It is painful to watch in comparison.) Is the Overlook haunted or is Jack having a breakdown while his family reels from his inner demons? Nicholson is brilliant as is Shelley Duvall who is irritatingly naive yet sympathetic and believable in her terror. Must see movie.

Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" has got to be one of the all-time worst big-budget horror films ever made. Everything about The Shining said "expensive", but nothing about it said "scary"..... It truly baffles me that such an impressive director as Stanley Kubrick would ever consider tackling the mess of a typical Stephen King horror novel and try to adapt it to the screen.... All-in-all - The Shining was a dud. There was only one frickin' murder in it, which, in my opinion, was a completely unforgivable body-count when it comes to any horror film.... Two of the biggest strikes against this film were the casting of that goofus, Jack Nicholson as Jack Torrance and having that pudding-faced kid, Danny Lloyd, as Torrance's brat son, Danny.

"A masterwork from a master filmmaker, The Shining is widely (and rightly) held as one of the greatest horror movies ever made. Much more than just a ‘horror movie’, celebrated auteur Stanley Kubrick warped Stephen King’s novel into something which oozes ambiguity (the hotel was haunted in the book, here it’s less clear) – which is why it remains so fascinating to this day. Still the subject of obsessive scrutiny (see recent documentary Room 237), many aspects of the film are open to interpretation. Not least that impossibly chilling final shot. While impatient newcomers will likely find the measured pacing a tad drawn-out (and there is an argument to be made here), The Shining is a deeply intoxicating experience. Right from the eerie opening where we wind along a mountain road via helicopter point-of-view, there’s a mounting sense of elusive unease. Arriving at the Overlook hotel, a feeling of deep-rooted evil runs through every frame in mesmerising fashion. Hell, even the dizzyingly-patterned carpets are somewhat hypnotic. Of course, general audiences are familiar with the more iconic scenes (“Heeere’s Johnny!”; the spooky twins; Red Rum), and it speaks volumes that they remain affecting despite years of parody. Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall and child actor Danny Lloyd are all excellent (as well as Scatman Crothers in a handful of key scenes), but the film is ultimately Kubrick’s. Feeding Nicholson cheese sandwiches (which Jack hated) to create a sense of repulsion and apparently forcing Duvall to do 127 takes of a single scene, the master craftsman’s obsessive approach and technical mastery results in some spellbinding filmmaking (see those long tracking shots), and an unforgettable experience." --Stephen Carty, Flix Capacitor

A clip of Danny seeing Grady's daughters (depicted as twins by Lisa and Louise Burns in Kubrick's version for the aesthetic effect). I highly recommend this movie.
